Two Hizb-ut-Tahrir activists detained in Kyrgyzstan

BISHKEK. Sept 16 (Interfax) - The State Committee for National Security has seized two activists of the outlawed extremist organization Hizb-ut-Tahrir in southern Kyrgyzstan, a source in the committee press service told Interfax on Tuesday.

The suspects were taken into custody in the town of Kara-Suu in the Osh region.

"They acted as a coordination and information liaison between regional structures operating in the Osh region and foreign extremist centers and a print media outlet disseminating extremist material and appeals for overthrowing the constitutional system of Kyrgyzstan," the source in the State Committee said.

Large quantities of outlawed extremist books, digital copying equipment, audio equipment and photo cameras were seized from the detainees.

"Investigative bodies of the State Committee for National Security opened a criminal inquiry upon the discovery and impoundment of extremist materials on suspicion of "organized activity aimed to incite ethnic, racial, religious or inter-regional feud," the source said.

One of the suspects resisted the arrest with cold steel.
