Naryshkin calls for avoiding confrontation between govt supporters, opponents
MOSCOW. Sept 16 (Interfax) - State Duma Chairman Sergei Naryshkin has called for avoiding an internal confrontation between the opposition and pro-government forces.
"In the midst of external pressure, we must on no account lapse into positions of nihilism and internal confrontation. Those who are practically attacking the authorities of their own country and "echoing" the authors and executors of the Western sanctions are absolutely wrong, but those who see any opposition as nothing but the notorious "fifth column" are also going too far," Naryshkin said at the autumnal session of the State Duma.
The constitution remains the keynote unifying idea for Russian society, he said. "It seems that democracy and law are the most solid platform for the development of the Russian state and society," the speaker emphasized.
"Such fundamental constitutional values as the law-governed state, federalism and the social focus of the domestic policy, as well as the freedom of speech, information and creativity will help release the huge internal potential of Russian society," he added.
