Russian Foreign Ministry and African Union agree to hold annual security consultations

ADDIS ABABA. Sept 18 (Interfax) - Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and Chairman of the African Union Commission Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma have signed a memorandum of mutual understanding that forms a mechanism for bilateral political consultations.

In the document, the Russian Foreign Ministry and the African Union pledge to maintain regular contacts in the international arena and work together to promote peace and security, look for solutions to regional conflicts and tackle economic and humanitarian problems.

The sides plan to hold such consultations at least once a year.

This memorandum is not an international and legally binding document.

Following the signing ceremony, Lavrov presented Russia's Order of Friendship to African Union Commissioner for Peace and Security Smail Chergui.
