Russian citizen carrying over 40 kg of heroin detained in Kazakhstan

KARAGANDA. Sept 22 (Interfax) - A 37-year-old Russian citizen transporting over 40 kilograms of heroin has been detained in the vicinity of the town Ushtobe in Kazakhstan's Karaganda region in a special operation of the drug control division of the regional police department, the regional prosecution service told Interfax.

"Two shopping bags containing 16 and 24 packages of beige-colored powder, respectively, were found on a Lada car of the Russian citizen. A laboratory identified the substance as heroin, which weighed 40,074 grams," the service said.

The suspect was put in a detention center and criminal charges were brought.

"Several hours earlier, the police holding a special operation in Karaganda detained a Nissan vehicle of a 32-year-old Kyrgyz citizen carrying $36,000 in a bag," the service said.

"There is a theory the money was supposed to be a payment for the drugs," it said.
