RZD could launch double-deck trains on commuter routes

BERLIN. Sept 23 (Interfax) - Russian Railways (RZD) is thinking of using double-deck trains on commuter routes and has sent the relevant enquiry to Stadler, which supplies these trains to Aeroexpress.

"We received a specific request from RZD for technical data, to look into the feasibility of using double-deck trains for commuter services. We haven't yet received the results of the analysis," Mathias Stehr, Stadler's commercial director for CIS countries, said on the sidelines of the InnoTrans exhibition.

The cost of any deliveries will depend on the specifications and size of the order, Stehr said.

If RZD does order any of the trains they will be produced in Belarus at the Stadler Minsk plant.

Stadler started producing the double-deck electric trains for Aeroexpress in the summer.

Aeroexpress signed a contract for double-deck electric trains, worth 685 million euros, in 2013, following a tender. The Swiss company won the contract to deliver 172 cars. A firm contract worth 381.3 million (not including VAT) calls for the delivery of 118 cars (16 four-car trains and nine six-car trains), with the first trains to be launched in June 2015. Stadler also received an option for 54 cars that can be exercised within several years.

Aeroexpress carries passengers in Moscow, Vladivostok and Kazan to and from local airports, and is also developing suburban rail services. Russian Railways (RZD) holds a 25% stake in the company.
