One third of 875,000 Ukrainians in Russia seek refuge or temporary residence - official

GORKI. Sept 24 (Interfax) - Over one third of Ukrainians staying in Russia have turned to the Federal Migration Service (FMS) for temporary refuge or a permit for temporary residence, FMS head Konstantin Romodanovsky has said.

"More than one third of the 875,000 or about 300,000 people have applied for temporary refuge or a permit for temporary residence," Romodanovsky said at a Wednesday meeting with Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev

He said that children constitute one third of that number.

"Since April 1 we have registered over 2.8 million border-crossings. I mean residents of that region [southeast Ukraine]," Romodanovsky said.

He said that the service succeeded in moving over 50,000 Ukrainians from Russia's Rostov region and Crimea and distributed them throughout Russia.

Medvedev pointed out that these people should not only be provided with temporary accommodation but questions concerning their employment should also be resolved.

"We have some 1,000 temporary accommodation facilities for those of them who have no chance of staying with their relatives or friends and the figure is changing as the territories are now accommodating people for the autumn and winter," the official said.
