Tehran, Moscow in talks over broader nuclear cooperation - ambassador
MOSCOW. Sept 24 (Interfax) - Moscow and Tehran are planning to broaden their nuclear cooperation, said Iran's ambassador to Russia Mehdi Sanai.
"The nuclear power plant (NPP) in Bushehr, which was built with Russia's help, has been a symbol of successful cooperation between our countries to this day. The plant works perfectly and provides electricity. But one NPP, as you understand, is not enough for Iran. So our task is to build more nuclear power plants. Tehran and Moscow are now in talks over expanding their cooperation in field of nuclear energy," Sanai said in an interview with the Rossiyskaya Gazeta to be published on Friday.
The diplomat said he is certain "that we have good prospects for cooperation in this area."
"We hope that electricity in Iran will be generated not only by NPPs but thermal power plants (TPPs) as well. The Russian and Iranian energy ministers are now closely cooperating on this matter. The result of which is an agreement between countries to upgrade two TPPs which were built in Iran by Soviet specialists. As well as upgrading the old TPPs, we are going to build new ones," he said.
