U.S. advisers to visit Ukraine to help with army reform - U.S. ambassador

KYIV. Sept 26 (Interfax) - A group of U.S. advisers will visit Ukraine to help with the modernization of its army, U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine Jeffrey Payette said in an interview with the newspaper Den.

The ambassador also said the U.S. is increasing its assistance to Ukraine in the sphere of security by $46 million.

Payette said, citing information provided by U.S. President Barack Obama, that new programs will be added to the assistance program, including the provision of modern anti-radar systems to Ukraine.

Payette said the U.S. is already providing armored vehicles, night vision systems, mine disposal devices, and medical assistance.

Payette recalled that there can be no military solution to this conflict. However, he said the U.S. believes that Ukraine should be able to defend itself and will support it in that. All NATO countries are now providing security assistance to Ukraine and the U.S. plans to do it in cooperation with its European partners, he said.

At the same time, Payette said the U.S. is going to continue supporting the peace plan proposed by Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko and the wish of the people of Ukraine to determine their future.
