Lavrov urges UN head to consolidate intl efforts in fighting terrorism

MOSCOW. Sept 27 (Interfax) - Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon met on Saturday in the corridors of the 69th session of the UN General Assembly in New York.

"Lavrov and Ban discussed the situation in Ukraine in the context of the current political crisis in that country, saying that political-diplomatic settlement has no alternative," the Russian Foreign Ministry said.

Lavrov made a point that the agreements reached by the trilateral contact group in Minsk on September 5 must be implemented in full. "The final result of this processes is the earliest possible launch of a comprehensive internal dialogue, aimed at normalizing the situation, including in the humanitarian sphere. The UN secretary general confirmed the UN's readiness to facilitate the settlement of the crisis in Ukraine," it said.

There was an exchange of views on the deteriorating situation in Iraq and Syria, given the growing terrorist threats coming from the Islamic State grouping. "The Russian foreign minister urged a consolidated international effort in fighting terrorism on a common political platform, without double standards and without dividing the terrorists into "good," or "bad," the Russian Foreign Ministry said.
