Runet must function safely, without isolation from other country segments - Nikiforov
MOSCOW. Oct 1 (Interfax) - Russia is prepared for destructive interferences in its segment of the Internet and will be creating elements to back up this infrastructure, said Russia's Communications Minister Nikolai Nikiforov.
"We are prepared for such destructive interferences but a great deal has yet to be done to ensure that the Russian segment functions properly and, most importantly, functions without being isolated from, but together with the segments of other countries under whatever confluence of circumstances," Nikiforov told reporters after a session of the Russian Security Council.
To that end, Russia will have to look annually for new answers to emerging threats, he said. "It is important to make sure that whatever the external destructive interferences, the Russian system's key components continue working. This requires certain measures that operators have already been implementing. We will spell out rules in a certain manner from the viewpoint of the industry regulator, which would allow preventing possible disruptions, but that does not imply a technical restriction of information being let through in this or other direction. This is indeed the creation of certain backup elements of the infrastructure," the minister said.
