Gang members detained in Karachayevo-Cherkessia

MOSCOW. Oct 2 (Interfax-AVN) - A gang has been neutralized in the Republic of Karachayevo-Cherkessia in Russia's North Caucasus, a spokesman for the region's law enforcement agencies told Interfax on Thursday.

"On Wednesday, officers of law enforcement agencies detained four members of a criminal group - three in Cherkessk, and one in the town of Karachayevsk. Four Kalashnikov assault rifles, a short rifle, a pistol and a large number of cartridges were confiscated from the detained men," he said.

Investigators are currently working with the suspects in order to establish whether or not they were involved in crimes committed in the region.

A criminal inquiry has been opened based on counts of the illegal possession and use of weapons and ammunition (Article 222 of the Russian Penal Code), the spokesman said.
