Powerful blast reported in center of Donetsk

DONETSK. Oct 2 (Interfax) - The center of Donetsk, eastern Ukraine, once again became the target of an artillery strike on Thursday, an Interfax correspondent has reported.

A plume of black smoke is rising near Panfilov Avenue, the correspondent said. A powerful explosion was heard in this area several minutes ago. Ambulances and emergency service vehicles are heading to the site.

Reports about casualties and destruction are being verified.

Nine civilians were killed and another 30 were injured as a result of strikes in Donetsk on Wednesday. Of them, six people died when a shell hit a minibus on the city's Kyivskoiy Avenue.

Three people, a biology teacher and two parents, were killed when Donetsk's School No, 57 was damaged in a strike on Wednesday.
