West's sanctions against Russia have no prospects - chair of Belarusian parliament's upper chamber

MINSK. Oct 2 (Interfax) - The West's sanctions against Russia have no prospects, says Anatoly Rubinov, the chairman of the Council of the Republic, the upper chamber of the Belarusian National Assembly.

"We see how tense the relationship between Russia on the one side and the U.S. and European states on the other has become over the past months," Rubinov said on the opening day of the Council of the Republic's autumn session on Thursday.

"A series of economic sanctions imposed on Russia by the U.S. and the EU inevitably provokes retaliatory measures, and a war of sanctions is in fact a new form of the Cold War," he said.

"We know from history of the second half of the 20th century that a cold war doesn't benefit a single country, and therefore we hope that the West will realize that the detrimental course toward confrontation has no prospects, and the conflict situation that has arisen will be settled favorably," Rubinov said.

"In any case, Russia is our ally, and we are ready to honor all of our allied obligations, including those regarding the prevention of the transportation of Western goods banned from being brought to Russia," Rubinov said. "In doing so, we should avoid any damage to our national interests," he said.
