Moscow negative about possibility of U.S. camp for training Syrian militants in Georgia
MOSCOW. Oct 2 (Interfax) - A U.S. camp for training Syrian opposition fighters in the Caucasus Republic of Georgia will complicate the process of normalizing the relations between Moscow and Tbilisi, the Russian Foreign Ministry said.
"Moscow took note of the reports which surfaced in the media a while ago about plans to set up a U.S. training camps for Syrian opposition fighters in Georgia," the ministry said in a commentary on website on Thursday.
"Needless to say that such a decision by Tbilisi would cause most serious damage to the stability and security in Southern Caucasus, close to the Russian borders," the statement said. "There would be inevitable negative consequences for the currently successful process of normalization of the Russian-Georgian relations," the Russian Foreign Ministry said.
"So the official denials heard from Tbilisi, including from the mouth of Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili, were taken by us seriously. We will be closely watching this topic," the statement said.
