Ukrainian shell hits Red Cross office in Donetsk, kills Swiss national - DPR

DONETSK. Oct 2 (Interfax) - Donetsk militiamen claim that a shell launched by the Ukrainian military has hit the office of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in Donetsk, killing one ICRC representative.

"The shell hit the building housing the Red Cross office at number 80a in Universitetska Street, causing damage and killing a Swiss citizen, "the Donetsk People's Republic (DPR) Defense Ministry told Interfax.

The body of the killed mission member is still at the scene, the ministry said. Emergency teams and investigators have started arriving at the ICRC office building.

Meanwhile, DPR first deputy premier Andrei Purgin has confirmed the shelling in central Donetsk.

"Indeed, just minutes ago the Ukrainian military were shelling the very center of Donetsk. The consequences of this shelling will be investigated by DPR law enforcement bodies. We have our own prosecutors and police for that," Purgin told Interfax.

A New York Times correspondent wrote on Twitter earlier on Thursday that a shell had exploded inside the building of the ICRC mission in central Donetsk killing a Swiss member of the mission.
