Russian satellite communications operator hopes to triple capabilities of orbital group by 2020

DOROKHOVO (Moscow region). Oct 3 (Interfax-AVN) - The state-run enterprise Space Communications (GPKS) will complete the work on the comprehensive program to develop the orbital group for the period until 2020 by the end of next year, GPKS General Director Yury Prokhorov said.

"The GPKS development strategy provides that the company should become regional operator Number 1 and become one of the top five global satellite communications operators by 2020," Prokhorov said at the conference Satcomrus - 2014, which opened in the Moscow region on Wednesday.

Prokhorov said GPKS is now working on proposals for Rossvyaz on the development of its orbital group.

"We plan to complete the work on the program by the end of next year," Prokhorov said.

Prokhorov said the GPKS orbital group now comprises 11 spacecraft. The total number of transponders is now 335 and the number of equivalent transponders should reach 970 by 2020, he said.

GPKS plans to launch on the orbit seven powerful telecommunications satellites by 2020, Prokhorov said. GPKS also plans to create an orbital group of three high-elliptical orbit communications satellites after 2025.
