South Stream prospects depend on situation in Ukraine - Federica Mogherini

BRUSSELS. Oct 7 (Interfax) - The European Union's incoming High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Federica Mogherini, believes that the political conditions needed to implement the South Stream project are absent at the moment due to the current situation in Ukraine and the state of relations with Russia.

All infrastructural projects should have a complete and solid legal framework, Mogherini said at her confirmation hearing in the European Parliament on Monday evening.

And if and when all the required political conditions are put in place, technical discussions could be resumed if the legal framework is observed in full, she said.

Mogherini also dismissed rumors of her allegedly preferences toward the South Stream project, saying that her latest speech at the European Parliament was misinterpreted because she actually meant the Southern Gas Corridor, in other words, gas from Azerbaijan.

Mogherini, however, admitted, as far as Azerbaijan is concerned, the EU is facing the problem of human rights violations in the country.
