Russia could harvest 104 mln tonnes of grain in 2014 - PM

MOSCOW. Oct 9 (Interfax) - Russia will harvest 104 million tonnes of grain this year, according to preliminary data, Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev said at Thursday's Cabinet meeting.

This would be the best result since 2008.

"The harvest is progressing a little more quickly than last year. Some 90% of grains and grain legumes have been threshed. By preliminary estimates, we can look forward to a very good harvest - around 104 million tonnes, and the most since the record year of 2008," Medvedev said.

Russia harvested a record 108 million tonnes of grain in 2008.

"We'll have an all-time record soy and rape harvest. The harvest for potatoes and other vegetables is a little higher than last year," he said.

But Russia needs to harvest more of these crops to bolster its food security, "especially now that European producers have left niches in our food market."
