Kyrgyz prosecutor asks UK for assistance in extradition of former President Bakiyev's son

BISHKEK. Oct 10 (Interfax) - Kyrgyz Prosecutor General Aida Salyanova has asked British Minister of State for Civil Justice and Legal Policy Edward Faulks for assistance in the extradition of Maxim Bakiyev sentenced in absentia to life imprisonment for a number of grave crimes.

A source in the press service of Kyrgyzstan's main supervisory body told Interfax on Friday, "The issue was discussed at an official meeting between Salyanova and Faulks."

"The meeting also touched upon mutual legal assistance regarding sentences on M. Bakiyev, the second Kyrgyz president's son, which had taken effect," the source said.

"Salyanova said that court orders regarding Bakiyev had taken effect. For instance, a ruling passed by the Pervomaisky District Court on April 4, 2014, sentenced him absentia to life imprisonment in a high security facility and confiscation of assets for organizing an attempt upon the life of British citizen Sean Daly," the source in the Prosecutor General's Office said.

"It was agreed at the end of the meeting to continue cooperation and contacts with the assistance from the Kyrgyz Foreign Ministry and the British Embassy in the republic," he said.

Maxim Bakiyev, a son of second Kyrgyz President Kurmanbek Bakiyev, was granted a political refugee status in the UK in June 2010.
