Supreme Court to handle Justice Ministry's motion to liquidate Memorial human rights group
MOSCOW. Oct 12 (Interfax) - The Russian Supreme Court on Monday, November 13, will handle a motion from the Justice Ministry to liquidate the veteran charitable and human rights organization, Memorial, a posting on the court's website says.
Previously the Moscow City Court upheld the demand of the prosecutor's office to recognize Memorial as a foreign agent based on the results of a probe. It turned down a protest from the organization against a judgment of Moscow's Zamoskvoretsky district court.
On June 4 President Vladimir Putin signed into law a bill empowering the Justice Ministry to include NGOs funded from abroad in the register of foreign agents at its own initiative. Such an organization not applying for inclusion in the register voluntarily shall be penalized.
Under the law the inclusion of an NGO in the register can be protested in court.
