Ukraine leader signs law on "self-rule status" of districts in Donetsk and Luhansk regions
KYIV. Oct 17 (Interfax) - Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko has signed into law a bill granting "special self-rule status" to certain parts of the Donetsk and Luhansk regions for three years, according to a report posted on the presidential website.
"Cities, towns and villages will be governed by their territorial communities through local administrations in accordance with the constitution and laws of Ukraine. The powers of the local councils and officials who were elected during the snap elections in line with Ukrainian Verkhovna Rada Law No.1680-VII will be terminated ahead of time. The forthcoming snap elections to the legislatures in cities, towns and villages, as well as the elections of the heads of cities, towns and villages in certain districts of the Donetsk and Luhansk regions have been set for December 7, 2014," the report says.
The law also regulates coordination between the authorities of these territories and the central government in Kyiv.
The document comes into force on the day of its official publication.
