Russian, American scientists to broaden cooperation - Russian Academy of Sciences president

MOSCOW. Nov 10 (Interfax) - President of the Russian Academy of Sciences Vladimir Fortov has held an unofficial meeting with a delegation of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences, during which Russian and American scientists expressed readiness to continue cooperating in various areas, including international security.

"The main result of today's meeting - for me, at least - is that we have agreed to broaden our relations and not to look back at those who think otherwise," Fortov told journalists after the meeting on Monday.

The Russian and American delegations met at the Russian Academy of Sciences presidium and talked behind closed doors. The U.S. was represented by Raymond Jeanloz, chairman of the Committee on International Security and Arms Control, and Micah Lowenthal, director of the Nuclear Security and Nuclear Facility Safety Program of the Nuclear and Radiation Studies Board, as well as an expert in Russian philology Rita Guenther.

The discussion covered international cooperation in global security, energy, including nuclear, climate change and medical research, Fortov said.

"The meeting is expected to give a fresh impetus to these activities," he said, adding that contacts between the academies of sciences are to facilitate dialogue between the scientific communities of the two countries despite the current political situation and difference in opinions.
