Moscow, Tehran sign protocol to intergovernmental agreement on eight nuclear power blocks in Iran
MOSCOW. Nov 11 (Interfax) - Russia and Iran have signed a protocol to an intergovernmental agreement to build eight nuclear power blocks in Iran, an Interfax correspondent reported from the signing ceremony.
The head of Rosatom, Sergei Kiriyenko, and the director of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran, Ali Akbar Salehi, signed the protocol to the intergovernmental agreement between the countries on cooperation in the construction of a nuclear power plant in Iran from August 25, 1992 and an inter-agency memorandum of mutual understanding on the expansion of cooperation in the nuclear sector.
According to the protocol to the intergovernmental agreement, the parties intend to cooperate in the construction of eight nuclear power blocks with VVER reactors on a turnkey basis on the territory of Iran (four blocks at the site of Bushehr NPP and four blocks at another site).
The protocol states that nuclear fuel for the NPP throughout the entire life cycle of the eight new blocks will be produced by Russia. Spent nuclear fuel will be returned to Russia for processing and storage.
