Russia, Algeria agree on unacceptability of foreign interference in Middle East - Lavrov

MOSCOW. Nov 12 (Interfax) - Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov at a meeting with Algerian Minister Delegate for Maghreb and African Affairs Abdel-Qader Messahel spoke of the situation in the Middle East, aspects of settling domestic conflicts in Libya and Mali and the need for joint efforts in combating terrorism.

"The situation emerging in the Middle East, North Africa and the Sahara-Sahel zone was discussed. The sides confirmed coinciding or close approaches of Russia and Algeria to seeking a peaceful settlement of regional problems on the basis of observing the principles of international law and the UN Charter," a Russian Foreign Ministry report issued on the results of the Wednesday meeting says.

"They shared the opinion about the unacceptability of foreign interference in the affairs of sovereign countries of the region, the importance of concerted efforts to rebuff terrorism," the report says.

The sides paid special attention to promoting the settlement of conflicts in Libya and Mali. This should be done "through a broad nationwide dialogue using the potential of neighboring countries," the report says.

"The role of Algeria in rendering relevant mediator services was singled out in this context," it says.

The sides also paid attention to issues of advancing Russian-Algerian political interaction in regional and international affairs.
