Russian PM: We are back to Myanmar years after Khrushchev's visits, willing to cooperate
NAYPYIDAW. Nov 13 (Interfax) - Russia would like to develop cooperation with Myanmar, the previous high-level contact with which was made over 50 years ago during the Soviet era, Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev said.
"The previous chairman of the Council of Ministers who came here was Nikita Sergeyevich Khrushchev. In fact, he paid two visits, one in 1955 and the other in 1960," Medvedev told reporters at the end of the East Asia Summit.
"Many years have passed and we are paying another high-level visit. We wish to develop cooperation with the republic (Myanmar)," the Russian prime minister said.
He said he was pleased with the summit. "The work is done. Perhaps, this is a summit with not so many differences between the parties although some [differences] naturally exist," Medvedev stated.
Earlier reports said the Russian premier had met with Myanmar President Thein Sein at the East Asia summit.
Thein Sein said he was pleased to see the Russian prime minister in Naypyidaw and noted that it was the first visit by a senior Russian official of that level in several years.
