Fires flare up in central Moscow apartments after sharp rise in gas pressure - emergencies ministry

MOSCOW. Nov 16 (Interfax) - Fires broke out in several apartments in Moscow's central Presnensky district on Sunday due to a sharp rise in gas pressure, the Emergency Situations Ministry's Moscow department has reported.

"Emergency fire brigades were dispatched to the scene immediately. The fire was rated 2 on the fire intensity scale," it said.

One person has been rescued.

A source in law enforcement services told Interfax that structural damage in the gas-distribution unit in central Moscow near Shelepikhinskoye Shosse caused a sharp rise in household gas pressure. Gas outbursts mostly occurred through old gas stoves, whose valves failed to withstand the pressure, the source said.

Ten apartments were affected. The gas went ablaze after a bang. Three people were injured.

The gas pipeline has been shut down.
