Four militants killed in Chechnya shootout, two policemen injured - source

ROSTOV-ON-DON. Nov 18 (Interfax) - Four militants were killed in a shootout with police near the village of Sernovodskaya in the Sunzha district of Chechnya in Russia's North Caucasus, a source in the republic's law enforcement agencies told Interfax.

"Four members of militant groups were surrounded on the outskirts of Sernovodskaya last night. They put up armed resistance to police officers. A shootout ensued, as a result of which the militants were eliminated. Two police officers were wounded," the source said.

The militants' identities are being established, he said. "They were wanted by the authorities for their involvement with militant groups," he said.

Three Kalashnikov assault rifles, parts of an improvised bomb, ammunition and two hand-held anti-tank grenade launchers were confiscated from the scene of the incident, the source said. A bullet-riddled car, which apparently belonged to the militants, was found at the site as well.
