Ambassador Tefft hopes that Russia won't do to eastern Ukraine what it did to Crimea

MOSCOW. Nov 24 (Interfax) - U.S. Ambassador to Russia John Tefft said he is hoping Russia will not do to eastern Ukraine what it did to Crimea.

In an interview published in the Monday edition of Kommersant, Tefft said the U.S. wants to see a world order in which international law and supremacy of law are respected. He said what happened was that Russia annexed Crimea, adding that he is hoping that this will not happen in eastern Ukraine.

Responding to a question as to whether he believes the U.S. sanctions against Russia are effective, Tefft said he believes the sanctions have had a serious effect and have added to the decline in the Russian economy which began long before the crisis in Ukraine. He also said that he believes some of the countersanctions have hurt Russian citizens more than the measures taken by the West.
