Over 11,000 children were subject to abuse in Russia in 2014 - Investigative Committee

MOSCOW. Nov 27 (Interfax) - Over 11,000 children were abused in Russia in 2014, and one out of every eight of these children was abused by their close relatives, Russian Investigative Committee official Vladimir Markin said on Thursday at a meeting of the Investigative Committee's consultative council on issues relating to assistance to orphaned children and children left without parental care.

"In his speech, the chairman of the Investigative Committee gave statistics of criminal cases investigated by the Investigative Committee, saying that over 11,000 children were recognized as crime victims in the first nine months of 2014," Markin said.

Markin said, citing Investigative Committee Chairman Alexander Bastrykin, that one out of every eight such children (12.1%) is a victim of crimes committed by his close relatives or family members

"Bastrykin also reiterated that investigators are using all procedural possibilities to fully conduct prevention activities," Markin said.

Markin said participants in the consultative council have spoken for changes to the current administrative and criminal legislation, improvements of the system of control by public organizations of the said issues, the development of an algorithm for helping families and children who are in difficult situations, and a discussion of the possibility of involving the mass media in the prevention of crimes against orphans.

"Proposals will be prepared and sent to the appropriate public bodies based on the results of the meeting," Markin said.
