Russia completes continuous anti-missile radar field
MOSCOW. Nov 29 (Interfax-AVN) - A new Common space system that will detect ballistic missile launches will be introduced in Russia in 2015, says Maj. Gen. Anatoly Nestechuk, the deputy commander of the Space Defense Forces.
"Starting from 2015 we will have a practically all-embracing second-echelon ballistic missile early warning system that consists of new Voronezh-class radar stations and is now being actively introduced in service," Nestechuk said in an interview with the Ekho Moskvy radio station on Saturday ".
The Voronezh radar was successfully tested in Kaliningrad and Irkutsk in 2014, he said.
"The Voronezh radar is to enter service in Kaliningrad in the very near future," the general said.
Two new Voronezh radars will be introduced in service on a trial basis in Barnaul and Vorkuta in 2015, Nestechuk said.
"Thus, the objective set before us by the country's president - that of creating a continuous radar field to protect the Russian Federation against a missile attack - will be attained in full this year. In some areas, there will be double-monitoring (over ballistic-missile launches)," the general said.
