During its EU presidency Latvia to do utmost to stabilize Ukraine via talks with Russia

BRUSSELS. Dec 3 (Interfax) - Latvia as the country presiding in the European Union will make every effort, together with the European Commission, to stabilize the situation in Ukraine through talks with Russia, Latvian Prime Minister Laimdota Straujuma has said.

"We will do our utmost to calm the situation [in Ukraine] down, together with European Commission Vice President Federica Mogherini," she said on Wednesday at a joint press conference with European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker in Brussels.

She found it impermissible that in the 21st century someone would simply annex part of another country and that nobody would react to it. "But it will be better for the whole of Europe if we succeed in negotiating with Russia," she said.

Asked about possible problems with the Russian-speaking population in Latvia Straujuma said that the situation is calm and stable even though her country is exposed to powerful media flows from Russian TV and other news channels.

She voiced her hope that reforms would begin and the situation would stabilize in Ukraine with the formation of the new Cabinet.
