Kazakh leader advises West to reach agreement with Putin

ASTANA. Dec 5 (Interfax) - Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev has described his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin as a liberal statesman, whose policies are supported by the majority of Russian citizens.

"The current situation inside Russia helps maintain this strong support for Putin today," Nazarbayev said at a press conference after talks with French President Francois Hollande in Astana on Friday.

"I believe that, contrary to what is being said in the West, he is the most normal liberal today, and no one can say what will happen there after Putin, and at what stage national patriotism or maybe even communist revanchism will be there, should it happen," he said.

"That is why one needs to take a broader look at this issue and try to find an opportunity [to reach an agreement with Putin]," Nazarbayev said.
