Top Russian MP calls refusal of U.S., Ukraine and Canada to back anti-Nazism resolution "blasphemous"
SOCHI. Dec 5 (Interfax) - The refusal of the United States, Ukraine and Canada to support the United Nations' resolution condemning the glorification of Nazism was an act of blasphemy in relation to millions of people who died defending their native country, Russian State Duma Speaker Sergei Naryshkin has said.
"It is sad to see what is happening in Ukraine, which is a fraternal country to all of us, on the land where fascists and Bandera fighters once wreaked havoc. Aggressive nationalism is rearing its ugly head there today on the wave of the anti-constitutional state coup and is sowing discord among the Slavic people," Naryshkin said at the 47th session of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Russia-Belarus Union on Friday.
"But it was Ukraine that voted against the resolution condemning Nazism in the UN along with the U.S. and Canada. It was nothing less than an act of blasphemy in relations to the millions who defended our common country, those who saved both Europe and the world from Nazism. It was also an act of blasphemy in relation to the millions of Ukrainians who died during World War II," he said.
"All this represents an extremely serious challenge facing the entire civilized community and the modern ideas of creative integration," Naryshkin said.
"But I am convinced that as 70 years ago, Nazism will not come to our soil, and victory will be ours," he said.
