Lavrov favors legal guarantees of indivisible security in Europe

BASEL. Dec 5 (Interfax) - Russia insists on legally binding guarantees of indivisible security on the Euro-Atlantic space, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said.

"We are campaigning and will continue to campaign for the strict compliance with the entire package of OSCE commitments, including the commitment to non-interference with international affairs and indivisible security on the Euro-Atlantic space," Lavrov said at a press conference in Basel, at the end of a meeting of OSCE foreign ministers.

He reminded the media about the Russian proposal "to shift the previous [OSCE] commitment to not strengthen one's security to the prejudice of the security of others from the field of political declarations to the field of legally binding agreements."

Russia stands for "the practical elaboration of mechanisms by which this principle of indivisible security will be observed," the minister continued.

According to Lavrov, the subject of European security was linked to the Ukrainian crisis and was discussed "in the context of the need for honoring all OSCE commitments."

"Regrettably, some of our partners have proposed a selective approach to the fulfillment of these commitments. Yet we call and will keep calling for the strict compliance with the entire package of OSCE commitments," the minister said.
