U.S. Under Secretary of State Gottemoeller to visit Kharkiv
KYIV. Dec 5 (Interfax) - The United States Under Secretary of State for Arms Control and International Security Rose Gottemoeller is traveling to Kharkiv this Saturday to attend the opening ceremony for the Neutron Source Facility at the Kharkiv Institute of Physics and Technology (KhFTI), a national scientific center.
Speaking at a briefing in Kyiv on Friday on the occasion of the 20th anniversary since the signing of the Budapest Memorandum, Gottemoeller said that she and U.S. Ambassador Geoffrey Pyatt will be traveling to Kharkiv on Saturday for the opening of the neutron facility there. This is a very important nuclear-research undertaking in Kharkiv, she said.
In March 2014, Ukraine and the U.S. completed the construction of the neutron source facility at the KhFTI.
The facility is expected to provide Ukraine with new research opportunities and the capability to make isotopes for industrial and medical use.
The project commenced in 2010 and was funded by the U.S.
