Russian landing ship Tsezar Kunikov returns to Sevastopol after being repaired in Bulgaria
SEVASTOPOL. Dec 8 (Interfax) - The large landing ship the Tsezar Kunikov of the Black Sea fleet has returned to Sevastopol after being repaired at the Flotsky Arsenal shipyard in the Bulgarian port Varna, the headquarters of the Black Sea fleet told Interfax-AVN.
"The large landing ship was taken to Sevastopol by the sea tug MB-31. In Sevastopol, the ship will join the permanent readiness forces of the Black Sea fleet," the source said.
The ship repairs, which began in July 2013, involve a large amount of hull work, work on the main engines, diesel generators, and the installation of new boilers, new galley equipment, and the modernization of the ship's working and residential space, the source said.
The source recalled that the cost of the vessel's repair in Varna counted towards the repayment of Bulgaria's debt to the Soviet Union.
The Project 775 big landing ship BDK-64 was built in Gdansk, Poland, and was put into service on September 30, 1986. On May 10, 1989, the ship was renamed Tsezar Kunikov.
