First block at Kudankulam NPP reconnected to India's energy system

MOSCOW. Dec 9 (Interfax) - The first energy block at the Kudankulam nuclear power plant (NPP) in India was reconnected to the country's energy system on December 7 following repairs on a turbo generator, Russian State Nuclear Energy Company Rosatom said in a statement.

The energy load at the block is currently 750 MW, and plans are being carried out to bring the block to nominal level. All systems are operating in design mode.

The first block at Kudankulam was connected to the grid on October 22, 2013. It was shut down due to technical issues in September 2013. It is scheduled to restart on January 22, 2015.

Construction of the second block has been completed. Equipment installation is currently underway, and the second block should be commissioned in April 2015.

Russia is building the Kudankulam plant under a bilateral agreement from November 20, 1988 and supplements to it from June 21, 1998. In 2002, Russia began building the first two power units at the station.
