Russian-Japanese anti-poaching agreement takes effect

MOSCOW. Dec 10 (Interfax) - A Russian-Japanese intergovernmental agreement on the prevention and deterrence of illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing (IUU) takes full effect on December 10.

According to the Federal Fisheries Agency, the agreement "On Conservation, Rational Use and Management of Living Resources in Northwestern Areas of the Pacific Ocean and Prevention of Illegal Trade in Living Resources" was signed in Vladivostok on September 8, 2012. The sides exchanged notes attesting their fulfillment of domestic procedures required for putting the document into effect on November 10, 2014.

The agreement requires a certificate attesting the legality of the catch in the unloading of Russian fish and fish products in Japanese ports starting December 10, 2014, said the Federal Fisheries Agency, the issuer of the certificate.

Russia has concluded similar agreements with North Korea, South Korea and China. In addition, there is memorandum on information exchange with Canada.
