Twenty nuclear power units to be built in India in 20 years - Russian-Indian document
DELHI. Dec 11 (Interfax) - A document titled 'Strategic Vision for Strengthening Cooperation in Peaceful Uses Atomic Energy between the Republic of India and the Russian Federation' signed in Delhi determines plans on building over 20 nuclear power units in India and cooperation in building nuclear power plants based on Russian design in third countries, Russian President Vladimir Putin said.
"The document determines plans on building over 20 nuclear power units in India, on cooperation in building NPPs based on Russian design in third countries, and joint production of uranium and nuclear fuel and disposal of waste," Putin said.
With regard to the nuclear power sector, Russia and India "have switched to a different level of cooperation; this is not just trade in commodities, services and technologies but the creation of a whole new sector for India," Putin said.
Rosatom chief Sergei Kiriyenko had told journalists earlier that a road map on nuclear cooperation between Russia and India envisions the construction of at least 12 nuclear power units in India within 20 years.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said bilateral nuclear cooperation between India and Russia provides for at least 10 power units with the highest safety standards in the world. He made it clear that this cooperation would imply the production of equipment and components in India.
Speaking about the construction of new units for the Kudankulam NPP, Modi said the parties were working on the construction of three more 1,000-MWt units.
