Russia and India sign deal to deliver equipment for 3rd and 4th units of Kudankulam NPP
DELHI. Dec 11 (Interfax) - Russia and India have signed a contract on the delivery of equipment for the third and fourth power-generating units of India's Kudankulam nuclear power plant (NPP).
"At 9:00 a.m. today, we signed a general framework agreement and a contract ordering the main equipment for the third and fourth power generating units of this NPP," the head of Russia's state nuclear power corporation Rosatom, Sergei Kiriyenko, told reporters in Delhi on Thursday.
The first power-generating unit of the Kudankulam NPP has already reached its full capacity, and the construction of the facility's second unit has been completed, he said.
"Under our schedule, the trial run of the second unit is expected to begin in the spring of 2015," he said.
When commenting on the power plant's third and fourth units, Kiriyenko said that efforts to fill the concrete bedding for the new units would be launched in early 2016.
"We have agreed to speed up the construction of the third and fourth units for this NPP since the Russian specialists had already accumulated experience when building the first and second units," he said.
The Rosatom head estimated the value of the contract signed on Thursday at several billion U.S. dollars.
