Tajik President: ISIL is "new century's plague"

DUSHANBE. Dec 17 (Interfax) - The so-called Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) is a universal danger which needs to be fought in Tajikistan amongst other countries, Tajik President Emomali Rahmon said on Wednesday.

"We should not underestimate the negative role of the ISIL for Tajikistan," Rahmon said at a pre-election congress of the People's Democratic Party he leads.

"The ISIL is a new century's plague and a worldwide danger," the Tajik leader said, indicating that over 200 citizens of Tajikistan were fighting for the extremist movement in Syria and Iraq.

"The Taliban, Al-Qaeda and the ISIL have the same goal: they want to destroy states and to bring chaos to the world order," the Tajik president remarked.

Rahmon urged compatriots "not to be indifferent and to block the global danger."

The People's Democratic Party is holding a congress in Dushanbe to nominate candidates for the March 1 elections of the lower chamber of the republican parliament. The party has a constitutional majority in the current parliament.
