Russia's Yasen-type subs able to fulfill function of non-nuclear strategic deterrence - Sevmash
MOSCOW. Dec 18 (Interfax-AVN) - For the first time in the history of Russia's Navy, a nuclear submarine will be able to fulfill a new function - the function of non-nuclear strategic deterrence, Mikhail Budnichenko, general director of the Sevmash enterprise, a member of Russia's United Shipbuilding Corporation, told Interfax-AVN on Thursday.
"In June, the St. Andrew's flag was raised on the lead nuclear submarine of the fourth generation Project Yasen - the Severodvinsk. It was a landmark event for Russia's entire shipbuilding industry and the Navy. The Project 885 multirole nuclear submarine [designed by the Malakhit Maritime Engineering Bureau] is a one-of-a-kind vessel in the world today. For the first time in the history of Russia's Navy, this submarine is able to fulfill a new function - the function of non-nuclear strategic deterrence," Budnichenko said.
