Israel hopes U.S. will veto UN SC draft resolution on Palestine
MOSCOW. Dec 18 (Interfax) - Israel hopes that the United States will block the passage of a draft resolution, submitted with the United Nations Security Council a day earlier, which sets the timeframe for the creation of the Palestinian State, Israeli Deputy Interior Minister Faina Kirschenbaum said.
"We are very hopeful that the U.S. will veto this resolution," she said in an interview with Interfax.
It was with this aim that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu travelled to the United States and met with Secretary of State John Kerry, she said.
"We hope that although it has no immediate obligation, the U.S. will support us and in this case the resolution will not pass," Kirschenbaum said.
"It is clear that we are not happy about this draft resolution. It contains the requirements to recognize the Palestinian State within two years and return to the 1967 borders. But whoever looks at what is going on in the Middle East understands that this is absolutely unrealistic," she said.
"Besides, the global problem that exists today is one of Islamic radical movements, it does not exist only within certain territories. One can say that the whole problem is linked to the resolution of the Palestinian issue, but if we look at what is happening in the world, we will see that even Australia has this problem. I am talking about the recent terrorist attack in Sydney," Kirschenbaum added.
"This is not just about territories, but the desire of radical Islamic movements such as ISIS, Hezbollah, Hamas and others to simply turn the whole world into one big caliphate," she said
A day earlier a draft resolution was submitted to the UN SC, concerning the creation of the Palestinian State, agreed upon by representatives of the Palestinian National Authority and France. Under the document, the sovereign Palestinian State is to be created within a year and Israel must withdraw its troops from the Palestinian territory.
