Ukrainian Security Service claims Luhansk woman planned to commit terror attack

KYIV. Dec 19 (Interfax) - The Ukrainian Security Service has prevented a terror attack in downtown Kyiv, according to the Security Service chief's advisor Markian Lubkivsky.

"The Ukrainian Security Service counterintelligence department has managed to prevent an awful tragedy in downtown Kyiv, a terror attack which was planned to be perpetrated just recently," Lubkivsky said at a press briefing in Kyiv.

He said a Ukrainian national, Luhansk resident Kovalenko, was carrying a bomb in her bag in an area between the Ivan Franko Theater and Independence Square on December 17.

'The bomb was equivalent to three kilograms of TNT and fragments would have been scattered over a radius of 500 meters if it had exploded. Multiple casualties were possible," Lubkivsky said.

Ukrainian Security Service main investigative department chief Vasyl Vovk said at the press briefing they had launched a criminal inquiry into the attempted terror attack.

He said the woman had been apprehended and the Kyiv Shevchenkovskiy District Court would issue a warrant for her arrest on Friday.
