Sefcovic hopes for more rational alternative to Turkish Stream

(technical repeat)

MOSCOW. Jan 14 (Interfax) - Maros Sefcovic, the EU's new energy chief, said he was surprised to hear about the Turkish Stream pipeline from Gazprom chief Alexei Miller, when he had travelled to Moscow to discuss the energy security of Southern Europe.

Sefcovic also said the European Commission was surprised by Gazprom's decision to divert all volumes of gas, including gas supplied via Ukraine, towards Turkey.

"Today we learned that the gas which is delivered in transit via Ukraine will be diverted to a new pipeline. We're talking about fairly large volumes of gas that probably won't be needed either in Turkey or Southeastern Europe," he said.

"First we need to analyze how much gas Turkey and countries of Southern and Central Europe will need," he said.

"But the question arises what should the countries of Central Europe then do. We need to look, maybe we can find a better solution, a more economically justified one," he said.
