KYIV. Jan 16 (Interfax) - An autotransformer at the South Ukraine Nuclear Power Plant caught fire last night, Energoatom, which operates all nuclear power plants in Ukraine, said in a press release.

"At 10:00 p.m. on January 15, a coupling autotransformer of the 1AT energy system was automatically shut down because of a fire at the South Ukraine NPP," it said.

The accident has not affected radiation levels at the facility, according to the press release.

"Emissions of radioactive substances in the environment stayed within the norm," it said.

The blaze covering an area of 100 square meters was contained at 11:35 p.m. and was extinguished at 11:40 p.m.

The fire has not caused any disruption to the nuclear power plant's operations.

The cause of the accident is being investigated.

The website of the Mykolayiv region's emergency situations department also offers information provided by South Ukraine NPP general director Volodymyr Lysnychenko, who said that "no one was killed or injured" as a result of the fire.

"The first and second power generating units are operating as usual and the third unit is undergoing routine maintenance," Lysnychenko said.

The 1AT-330/150 transformer was filled with 70 tonnes of oil, he added.
