Armenia opens criminal cases following riots in Gyumri

YEREVAN. Jan 16 (Interfax) - The Armenian Investigative Committee has opened criminal cases into violations committed by participants in protest rallies in Gyumri in the northwestern part of the country on charges of disorderly conduct and resistance to law enforcement authorities, Investigative Committee spokesperson Sona Truzian told Interfax.

An investigation is under way, she said.

Protests broke out in Gyumri on Thursday. Their participants demanded that Russian serviceman Valery Permyakov from the 102nd Military Base stationed in Gyumri, who is suspected of killing a family of six Armenians, be handed over to the Armenian justice system.

Fourteen people, including five policemen, were hospitalized after clashes between the demonstrators and police.
