Naryshkin tells Duma Russian delegation defends truth about Auschwitz liberation at PACE

MOSCOW. Jan 28 (Interfax) - The Russian delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) corrected PACE President Anne Brasseur who failed to mention those who liberated inmates of the Auschwitz concentration camp 70 years ago in her speech at the Assembly, State Duma Chairman Sergei Naryshkin said at the house's plenary meeting on Wednesday.

"We strongly and firmly responded to the fact that the PACE president did not say a word about those who liberated Auschwitz in her long and rather detailed speech dedicated to the liberation of Auschwitz inmates. As if Auschwitz inmates were freed by some supernatural forces and fascism vanished all by itself," he said.

Naryshkin who led the Russian delegation to the PACE winter session returned from Strasbourg on Tuesday.

He said the delegation "corrected" the PACE president and pointed out that "Auschwitz inmates were freed by Soviet army units and fascism was defeated by the efforts of many but, primarily, by the efforts and sacrifices of our country, our people."

"We will keep saying so all the time!" Naryshkin said.

He noted that the Russian delegation held a separate ceremony besides the Holocaust memorial stone in Strasbourg.

"We did that in an impressive and public manner," the speaker underlined.
