Syrian opposition representative on dialogue with authorities: talks begin, acceleration to increase over time
MOSCOW. Jan 28 (Interfax) - The dialogue between Syrian opposition and government representatives has begun, with the former hoping this will allow further progress, Syria's People's Will Party Secretary Qadri Jamil told reporters.
"I think that the process has begun and will get going. First it will be hard and slow, but we are going already. Over time acceleration will increase, and the results will be increasingly obvious," he said.
He stressed that the intra-Syrian consultations in Moscow were an important first step.
The plan stipulates the need to stop bombing populated areas where IS terrorists are presumably hiding out, Jamil said. The attack of populated areas, both by militants and by government forces, leads to civilian deaths, he said.
The plan also mentions the need to set up a commission to investigate human rights abuses and the lifting of sanctions against Syria, he said.
Also, at the consultations the opposition discussed the illegal trafficking of weapons in Syria, he said. "All this should get to a point where weapons are held only by official representatives of the future state," Jamil said.
"The ten points were passed almost unanimously," he said.
