Historical debates disguise for turf war - Medinsky

VOLGOGRAD. Feb 2 (Interfax) - Remarks made by foreign politicians about the Second World War are tantamount to hostilities on the ideological front, Russian Culture Minister Vladimir Medinsky has said.

"This is about a fight for territory, for resources, served up under the guise of clarifying history, fighting for historical truth. They are fighting for oil and gas - this is what really is at issue. Then they will also claim reparations. The Baltics have already counted billions and billions from 'Soviet occupation'," Medinsky told reporters in Volgograd on Monday.

No one is interested in real historical facts, and the attempts to review history aim "to question Russia's status as the successor to the Soviet Union, as the winning power," the minister said.

"The next step will be to demand not just to separate Russia from two small Kuril Islands, the next step will be to claim all Kuril Islands, Sakhalin, Karelia, Vyborg, the Kaliningrad region. This is what this is about," Medinsky said.
